[SOLVED]Got the 8inch Touch Display Shell kit but no screen.

Unread postby Raymond Day » Mon Dec 19, 2016 1:30 am

I used:

ubuntu64-16.04lts-mate-odroid-c2-20160204.img

New image on a 8GB eMMC in a Odroid-C2.

Updated it all took a wile had a lot of updates. apt update & apt dist-upgrade

The did find / -name boot.ini because they don't say were it is.

I found it at /media/boot/boot.ini and that's the one I edit.

But it's all so at /usr/shar/bootini/boot.ini

Maybe I should edit that one for the screen to work. It lights up and then after time don't light up. I guess times out.

All it says how to edit it is this:

Configuration for C0/C1/C1+/C2 (Edit boot.ini file)
Comment 1080p line out and uncomment the 1024x768 line enable "DVI" option.
.
.
# setenv m “1080p” # 1080P@60Hz
.
.
setenv m "1024x768p60hz"
.
.
.
# HDMI DVI Mode Configuration
.
setenv vout_mode “dvi”

So I just added 2 lines and put a # before the one they said to do it to.

Here is my /media/boot/boot.ini now.

Code: Select all

Yes, "/media/boot/boot.ini" is correct one.

What is your current kernel version (uname -a)?
Show me a picture of your hardware connection too.

That is with the top open so can see the inside.

The screen just lights up that's it. Nothing on it.

On the setenv m "1024x768p60hz" LCD 8inch I forgot to put the # before the comment! So I fixed it so it looks like:

setenv m "1024x768p60hz" # LCD 8inch

I changed the setenv vout_mode “dvi” to one of the lines it showed like this setenv vout "dvi".

Now it's not booting. The new LCD lights up just some not wight like it use to. Just real dim now.

I guess I can put the eMMC in another server and edit the setenv how they said.

Did do that. Did a fdisk -l and it showed this:

Code: Select all
Disk /dev/sdi: 7.3 GiB, 7818182656 bytes, 15269888 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0xd3630000

Device     Boot  Start      End  Sectors  Size Id Type
/dev/sdi1         2048   264191   262144  128M  c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/sdi2       264192 15268864 15004673  7.2G 83 Linux
root@STK2MV64CC:~# mount /dev/sdi2 /media/tmp
root@STK2MV64CC:~# umount /dev/sdi2
root@STK2MV64CC:~# mount /dev/sdi1 /media/tmp
root@STK2MV64CC:~# umount /dev/sdi1
root@STK2MV64CC:~#

I mounted it but the wrong one so did the other one and edit it with WinSCP. Put it back like this:

# setenv vout "dvi"
# setenv vout "vga"
setenv vout_mode “dvi”

Then un-mounted it and it boots up now.

The LCD lights up around the sides but nothing on the display.

Yes mine looked like that and I took the # out of the start of the setenv m "1024x768p60hz"

Now the LCD lights up very dim before it light up around the sides now it's just all dim.

It will not boot ether. Maybe I can't have both the setenv m "1024x768p60hz" 2 times?

Got to put the uMMC back in another server to edit it again.

The "vout_mode" should be "vout".
https://github.com/mdrjr/c2_bootini/blo ... ot.ini#L86
Just uncomment # setenv vout "dvi" line.
Sorry for the confusion caused. I've updated the product page.
http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products ... 7918565945

If it doesn't help, remove the C2 board from the Vu8.
And connect the Vu8 to your PC via HDMI cable to narrow down the root causes.

I don't know what you mean about J1 ? It that the jumper cable to the GPIO pin #33 and #35 I did do that one. I did all it shows that I know of.

On the side were the power plugs in there is a little blue and red LED can see though the case. I don't know if that means any thing.

I did do that just had the uncomment the setenv vout "dvi" and now it don't boot.

The screen lights up dim and at lest this time the sides don't light up.

I will take the board out and hook it up to a HDMI. I guess have to put the eMMC in another system and put the setenv back how it was so it will boot.

Yes it boots up it I put it to this:

Code: Select all
# HDMI DVI/VGA modes
# Uncomment only a single Line! The line with setenv written.
# At least one mode must be selected.
# setenv vout "dvi"
# setenv vout "vga"
setenv vout_mode “dvi”

If I take the # out of # setenv vout "dvi" and delete the setenv vout_mode “dvi” line it don't boot.

Now when it boots the sides of the LCD light up but still no display.

How I got it now is in the code box here in this post.

Your LVDS connection cable seems NOT to be fully inserted.
Refer this picture.

BTW,
How did you edit the boot.ini file on your PC?
Did you use a Linux compatible text editor like Edit-Plus?

I plug the big ribbon cable in more. It goes in a lot. Then I set it for setenv vout "dvi" and this time it booted. But still no display. But the display lights up like a old TV with rounded corners. I got this photo of it.

IMG_20161219_034512.jpg

At lest I can log in to it still.

When I give it a power off command the screen turns off in a sec. So at lest it lights it up. But nothing on it.

I wanted to get a photo like yours. Here is mine now after I put the cable in better.

It still boots up but now the display is back to dim nothing on it. I guess it's something with the big ribbon cable I will try to plug it in again.

I am not sure what you mean by that. Plug the ribbon cable from the 8 inch display to my PC some how to a HDMI? I don't know how I would do that.

# HDMI DVI/VGA modes
# Uncomment only a single Line! The line with setenv written.
# At least one mode must be selected.
setenv vout "dvi
# setenv vout "vga"
setenv vout_mode "dvi"

you shold have this..
.not shure if this is the problem or not but your file look`s ok from what i can see...
but you have the dvi line both commented and un-commented remove the first instance and un-comment the second listing
so it looks like this....

Code: Select all
# setenv vout "vga"
 setenv vout_mode "dvi

# Uncomment only a single Line! The line with setenv written.
# At least one mode must be selected.
setenv vout "dvi"

# Uncomment only a single Line! The line with setenv written.
# At least one mode must be selected.
# setenv vout "vga"
setenv vout_mode "dvi"

and not this

Maybe this is why. It says linux-image-c2 kept back.

Code: Select all

The following packages have been kept back:

Do I need to install that? If so how?

I looked and did this:

Did you try to connect the Vu8 to your PC with a HDMI cable?

I put your boot.ini in mine but not change. Still no display.

I renamed the boot.ini I had and then made a new file with nano /media/boot/boot.ini

Then just copied and paste your boot.ini in nano and saved it.

Rebooted and not change on the display but now can't log in to it over Ethernet. I guess have to restore the backup of the boot.ini from the copy I made.

So I guess it's not the boot.ini then.

That's how I did have it. I even then plug the HDMI to a TV and it worked on that so I know it was working.

But not sure about usb extension cable. Do you have a photo of how it should be?

I did do that and the screen don't even light up then. The video LED on it don't come on. The power LED does.

i am exhausted with ideas here....givin this if you just simply connect the power to the lcd..eg plug the plugpack adapter into the l.c.d screen and power it on then run a seperate hdmi lead to the l.c.d from your computer it should come on with the p.c`s image display..

Did not know what you ment by J-1 and I looked and found this:

ODROID-C2 power can be provided through USB OTG port instead of DC jack by connecting jumper J1.

It's all ready has a jumper on there and the VU8 board has a slot in it so it can poke though the board.

Got this photo of it to show it now that I don't have the screws in I can just pick up the bottom.

showing J1 Odroid-VU8.jpg

So that can't be what is wrong.

The power and video lights do come on with the new board. So that looks good. The LCD just lights up but no display.

The screen just don't work. Can I send the hole thing in so can test it and make sure it works and then can send it back to me?

The only thing the screen light comes on but nothing in the display.

For the Raspberry Pi 7" Touchscreen Display. I got 2 of them they both work and been like that for months and they worked the 1st time and I had to put them together too.

Spent a lot of time with this and still don't work. I am using the power supply off my Odroid-XU same plug and it has 5 volts at 4 amps. So that is not the problem. I can't remember if I order it with or with out a power supply but looks like the cost stays the same.

I all ready did hook it up like a LCD monitor and still got no video not even the video LED came on the board just the power LED. But when it's on the Odroid-C2 both the power and video LED's light up on the side.

I've been following your thread and I too am running into the same issues. I'm not sure if the problem is with software or our hardware kits

Hmmm..!!

just to cover the bases here...i dont believe it to be the c-2 or the boot.ini file..when the c-2 is hooked to a monitor it works fine...

when the lvds and screen is hooked up there is just a blank screen..

h-k have not tried the l.c.d to a computer as far as i know they are in the process of doing just that...

i cannot seem to get a proper response as what raymond has tried with just hooking up the lvds and lcd screen to a computer..i layed out how to do this but did not get a clear response from him on the matter as far as i can make out what he did try..was a "no-joy" so i think it may well be the l.c.d to be the issue...i have been through many things with raymond..

it could be a possibilty that the micro film strip connectors and the film it`s self a connection issue..not 100% shure on that

to get my hands on one of these units would take me prolly 6-9 days.. if i order this week...not 100% if i can cut the cash ..it`s Xmas..and they prolly close as well..h-k that is....

although i have a theory...can somebody try a hdmi lead between the c2 and the lvds-l.c.d..i have had a faulty dual hdmi plug board in the past.. hdmi ..
the short hdmi cable that is flat cabled..would be fine of a vu7 kitset...????

Code: Select all
apt update & apt upgrade && apt dist-upgrade

that may solve the issue..not 100% certain..but worth a try

go into you software and update`s via the gui and select all possible updates as you can.
