I don't have a "git" with 4.9 Kernel.. But I have a folder from where you can download and install Kernel 4.9 : http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/kernel/XU3/4.9.x/
Make sure you alter /etc/fstab:
Code: Select all
su -
sed -i "s?/dev/mmcblk0p1?UUID=`ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/ | grep mmcblk0p1 | awk '{print $9}'`?" /etc/fstab

Do this BEFORE you install Kernel 4.9 or else it won't be able to finish booting.

Hi meveric. I'm using your image (as we spoke on the other thread) and I although I'm having no issues mostly, I can't log through SSH with PuTTY with normal users. I can acess with root (since I changed the PermitRootLogin to yes). But when I tried to swap the user after I loged with root, I still can't put my password through SSH, although I know is the right one since physically works. I tried some tweaks like editing ChallengeResponseAuthentication, GSSAPIAuthentication, UsePAM, UseLogin (everything with yes and no) and I have changed PasswordAuthentication to yes. Is there something I'm missing? I won't mind not login directly with normal user since I will put keys soon, but I don't like not being able to swap the user I added myself. Thanks in advance.

by default only root is forbidden via SSH, due to Debian's default policy, every other user should have no issues to connect via SSH.
How did you create the new user?
I normally just use adduser <username> I've used it many times and it always worked and i can login with these users both on console or via SSH.

And I really wonder what's the issue with not being able to switch to another user.. especially root can do this by default su - <user> as root will always make you to that user even without password.

That's the way I did it. Actually, I can log in the physical board with no problem.

meveric wrote:And I really wonder what's the issue with not being able to switch to another user.. especially root can do this by default su - <user> as root will always make you to that user even without password.

I can do su - <user> perfectly, the issue comes when I have to put the password, for sudo for example, or if I don't want so log into PuTTy with root. It just says "access denied". I can provide DEBUG3 log if you want.

EDIT
I'm so sorry, I made a mistake yesterday. My keyboard layout changes from physical machine to PuTTy so when it came the time to enter the password on PuTTy, I though I was using the right one, but since the layout on physical machine is English, I did not put some special characters that I was introducing on PuTTy, so the passwords weren't the same. The image runs perfectly and I'm so sorry for making this mistake.

I am so glad I found this OS!

I would like to use ffmpeg to stream a video file to my XU4's hdmi. Could someone give me an example of a command to do this? ffmpeg -i bigbunny.avi -o hdmi? or something like that?

My googlefoo is failing me.

The reason I posted this here is meveric mentions using ffmpeg in the OP of this thread.

Hi meveric, I installed your kernel 4.9 and do this before :
Code: Select all
su -
sed -i "s?/dev/mmcblk0p1?UUID=`ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/ | grep mmcblk0p1 | awk '{print $9}'`?" /etc/fstab

Then I do
Code: Select all
dpkg -i linux-headers-4.9.13+_4.9.13-20170308-XU3_armhf.deb linux-image-4.9.13+_4.9.13-20170308-XU3_armhf.deb
reboot

It worked but now I have no network and it boots too fast (7 seconds, I don't think that's normal because normally it boots in 12-13 seconds).

ffmpeg is a converter and can also be used as a server for online streams. If you just want to play something on the TV/Monitor, you can simply use ffplay with your file:
Code: Select all
ffplay bigbunny.avi

ffplay is a tool that comes mit dem ffmpeg package.

First:
Please note, that I don't fully support Kernel 4.9 yet, and don't consider it stable in any case. The packages I provide is just for people that want to try it out, although they should work mostly fine.

That being said:
Generally the commands look fine can you see the terminal after the image is booted? Means do you have a login prompt, or a Desktop? Or how do you see it only takes 7 seconds?
I haven't had time to test all the Kernels yet. I tested the 4.9.12+ and it worked fine, the others I build since I had time to do so but did not test them yet.
I'll also build a new one soon I guess. Along with some other packages.
Can you check dmesg, /var/log/syslog and ip addr show for signs of the ethernet adapter and/or it's errors?

Yes I can see terminal after image is booted (I have no desktop GUI) and I can login.
I think (maybe I'm wrong) it takes 7 seconds to boot because the last line in dmesg is
Code: Select all
[6.942445] systemd-journald[274] : Received request to fush runtime jounral from PID1

I see nothing about network in dmesg.

In /var/log/syslog I have these lines concerning netowk:
Code: Select all

Mar 14 18:19:46 odroid-jessie networking[357]: Cannot find device "eth0"

Mar 14 18:19:46 odroid-jessie networking[357]: done.
Mar 14 18:19:46 odroid-jessie systemd[1]: Started LSB: Raise network interfaces....

The results of "ip addr show" is:

That's very odd.. I will try this later the week as well.. can you download the 4.9.12 Kernel in the same folder and try that? You can put it on boot on a windows pc or any other linux box.
I tried the 4.9.12 and I know that one was working fine with network.. If 4.9.12 is working.. then maybe the 4.9.13 is broken (or at least the one build).
have you checked that you're really on 4.9.13? uname -a?

I reinstalled debian on an SDCard to test kernels, so I just upgraded packages already installed and I tried to install kernel 4.9.12.
I don't know if this helps but here the commands and the results :

Hmm everything looks fine from what I can see.
No desktop, no network-manager or such installed I guess?
I'm not sure what could cause this.. I tried in my ODROIDs and it's working.. I just uploaded a new version of 4.9.13+ and it's working on my side.
Network is up and running.

could be.. and under Kernel 3.10 Network is fine?
can you compare /boot/boot.ini and /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules both should have the same macaddress.
I wonder if there's even an entry for eth0 in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.

Under kernel 3.10 it's fine yes.
In /boot/boot.ini there is this line with "macaddr" :
Code: Select all
setenv macaddr 00:1e:06:61:7a:50

In /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules there is
Code: Select all

hmm they do not match, which is odd.. can you try to alter the udev rule to match the MAC from the boot.ini? change the 52 to 50 and see if it's doing something...
I found the 4.9 Kernel is acting quite different than the 3.10 on network.
My device get's a different IP if I boot from 4.9 Kernel than when I boot from 3.10 although it has the same MAC. Very odd.

That firmware is for MFC video decoder (for example used in Kodi) you can fix that by installing "firmware-samsung".
But it has nothing to do with the network.

Hi,

Great image. I have installed desktop mode (recommanded Mate).

Do you know if we can use Wifi module 0 with this OS?

It's seems it is not recognized.

The OS uses the same Kernel than the Ubuntu images, so Kernel wise it should be able to run it.
If it does not, please check the output of dmesg when you plugin the module. Maybe it's just missing the firmware which can easily be installed, for example
Code: Select all
apt-get install firmware-ralink

I might even have a DKMS module for it not sure.
Please check the dmesg output and /var/log/syslog when you plug-in the module to see what could be the issue.

Hi,

i try compile ffmpeg from source and stuck with this error

Code: Select all

ERROR: librtmp not found using pkg-config

If you think configure made a mistake, make sure you are using the latest
version from Git.  If the latest version fails, report the problem to the
ffmpeg-user@ffmpeg.org mailing list or IRC #ffmpeg on irc.freenode.net.
Include the log file "config.log" produced by configure as this will help
solve the problem.

i cannot find librtmp.pc file?
also the openssl.pc file i could not find

Code: Select all
apt-get install librtmp-dev

openssl has similar files, you need to install the missing packages before you can build ffmpeg.

Hello guys. I am preparing to install the 4.9 kernel provided by meveric. My XU4 also has a different MAC address in boot.ini and in 70-persistent-net.rules. The MAC address shown by ifconfig is the one in boot.ini. I am running OMV 3, based on Debiab 8 (Jessie). It would be a drag to not have network.
Riddle me this, riddle me that

If it does not, please check the output of dmesg when you plugin the module. Maybe it's just missing the firmware which can easily be installed, for example
Code: Select all
apt-get install firmware-ralink

I might even have a DKMS module for it not sure.

Thanks it was this missing package.
And sorry I have write in wrong topic, I have install Debian for C2 from this topic.

Meveric,

I've been using your image for Tvheadend backend and Oscam for my PVR on Odroid XU4. Thank you very much for the image, it works perfectly. My kernel is 3.10.104+.

Now I want to use transcoding in Tvheadend. I want to use hardware transcoding and I found out that this only works in kernel 4.9 for Odroid XU4. This is the ONLY thing I want to add to my current image. I just want everything else to work as it did and just implement hardware transcoding.

I see from previous posts you do not support 4.9 and don't consider it stable even though you made few kernel images. Do you think it would be possible to just install one of your kernel 4.9 images and have the hardware transcoding work while other essentials (network, USB, ssh, tvheadend, oscam) working without issues? If not, is it even possible to implement hardware transcoding in 3.10.104+ by compiling with some crazy patch? Any answer is appreciated.

No, that's exactly the reason why I haven't switched to 4.9 yet. If you switch to 4.9 the Kernel is able to use hardware transcoding, but the applications are not.
You need to recompile ffmpeg with the correct options to use hardware transcoding of the new Kernel.
Also I don't know if this is working with TVHeadend or not, since TV Headend uses his own ffmpeg as well.. So their might be some hacking invovled to tell tvheadend to use the correct ffmpeg version.
Besides that, several people have issues with network on 4.9 Kernel. the MAC address set in /boot/boot.ini seems to be ignored and not everyone has network after a reboot.
There are also some issues with the colors which can cause everything to have a blue/red tint : viewtopic.php?p=180906#p180906
I've noticed that in several OpenGL(ES) applications.

Unlikely or else it would have been done a long time ago already.

Thank you. I will wait until you give your blessing to the 4.9 kernel for Odroid XU4.
